I often think of questions I wish I’d asked my parents. I don’t reproach myself that I didn’t ask because I had to become the age I am now for those questions even to occur to me.
Yesterday, listening to “Alice’s Restaurant,” it hit me for the first time that both my (much older) brothers were of draftable age. Did my parents live in terror of their sons being forced to go to Vietnam? One brother is dead, the other estranged, and even they wouldn’t know how my parents felt.
I’ll never know.
