The way Bitcoin was built, the model is that you have Decentralization, Security, and Auditability. You start messing with any of those via throughput(block size) for example and you disrupt the decentralization. You alter and allow some sort of private transactions for example and out goes auditability. Smart contracts in the terms of a Turing completeness and out goes security.
