My point was that the writers wanted to make their technical jargon sound convincing. Being Brits they would be familiar with hearing the term "phase" with regards to electricity. They used it because it sounded technical.

With you not being a Brit, I was guessing the term might have stuck out more for you but either way, as a piece of dialogue, it's up there with reversing the polarity of the neutron flow really - just for appearances 😀
