I get your point, I think it's an issue of freedom

So I'd like there to be options

To use relays that do/don't honor delete requests

To use clients that do/don't honor delete requests (or better, have that as a configurable option)

I imagine this will come in time

That implies that there is no freedom to permanently delete things, only to express a preference

But that was always the case

For it to be otherwise it would have to be baked in an enforceable way into the protocol
