sometimes people aren't sure what it means to "know the land" or "relate to the land" or "learn from the land".

this kind of knowledge comes to you, through your senses. you hear the winds, you hear the rains. you hear them coming, you hear them going, you hear which way they come and go. why is this useful? because you can adjust what you do and when you do it, taking into account how you hear the winds and rains coming and going.

and this kind of knowledge, one can acquire it just by living with the forest (or whatever your local ecosystem is) and not being fully abstracted from it. i didn't go out *seeking* to understand how winds and rains move through the forest, but just by being here long enough and listening, i learned how to do it. *that's* "learning from the land".
