Biros were banned when I was at school too, years ago, but weirdly, fancy ballpoints weren't, even though they're the same thing underneath! We were mostly told to use those all-plastic felt-tip things though, which are horrible environmentally as they're a huge lump of plastic and chemicals that you then throw away after a few weeks!
