There needs to be a word for this kind of off-line #Inshittification. It’s not quite leaking money out of people, but it perfectly illustrates why this online culture is toxic. I just witnessed a younger person in their 20s trying to make a transaction over the phone. The representative, assuming that they were tech savvy, kept insisting that they do it online. The younger person kept telling them that They weren’t very good with technology so could they do this over the phone, because she got confused by the ads and by them not clearly displaying which was a transaction for the ad and which was a transaction tied to the website. The website basically had a bunch of dark patterns that would lead users to input their credit card numbers and pay for a thing they did not want to pay for. The representative was incredulous because younger people are supposed to be good with technology so why couldn’t she just do this online. This person is younger than I am. I kind of wish that we Quit painting senior citizens as tech illiterate because the more that I see younger people struggling with technology, the more I think about ageism and what that says about society and #Accessibility
