I hate to be the guy to say it, but before Californians start to rebuild, their building codes need to be reviewed, rather than the emphasis on environment maybe they should focus on structural integrity and flame resistance.
I know a couple of years ago They started making us use type IL cement in our concrete because it has a lower CO2 footprint but the reality is, they are cutting the cement with ground limestone or fly ash. Since we’ve been using it, we get many more shrinkage cracks even after following all adequate curing methods.
California has a huge impact on all our specifications used throughout the country. I wouldn’t be surprised if all the infrastructure that was built in the last 5-10 years has 1/2 the life cycle of structures that were built with type I or II cement.
