For my 'birthday' holiday this year (2024) we visited Herefordshire and visited quite a few places including Eastnor Castle.
Eastnor Castle was commissioned by John Cocks, 1st Earl Somers, between 1812 and 1820. Cocks was a wealthy landowner and politician who wanted a grand home that reflected his status and the Gothic aesthetic popular in the early 19th century.
The castle was built on the existing estate of the Somers family, who had connections to the land since the 16th century. Eastnor was intended to serve as both a family home and a symbol of the Somers family's power and prestige.
