Likely a different species. I can often tell where I am by the bite. Huge swelling, but no itch; little swelling but really itchy, but only lasts a short while; itch goes away but come back 2 days later, worse; etc.
New ones moved into my cottage area. Usually a light breeze kept them away, but the new ones are like kamikazes, can fly in higher winds, and bites are really itchy.
