“SONGS OF INNOCENCE AND OF EXPERIENCE
Blake's most widely known illuminated books are Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience.
Blake wrote and designed these poems in response to books for children that conveyed moralizing messages through the combination of simple illustrations and short rhymes.
The poems in Songs of Innocence make observations about the world from the perspective of a naive child. Songs of Experience represents Blake's view that through experience, the individual comes to know fear, inhibition, conflict, and corruption.
The relationship between image and text is highly complex: the picturesque and dramatic tableaux complement, clarify, and sometimes contradict the poems.”
