From what I’ve heard with Mastodon you have these different servers that you are siloed in. If you join one you really don’t interact with people on other servers unless it’s federated. I think there’s also the fact that if you are banned that you need to work with the server admin to get your profile info off.
With these relays here you can have posts and metadata go to multiple relays and have redundancy. You can also interact with people on common relays who also may not be on all the same relays as you.
I think the differences will show themselves more as Nostr clients and the protocol get developed. Right now no one is banning anyone on relays so we haven’t had that “test” yet. Lol
