I've been reading Maria Ressa's book, "How to Stand Up to a Dictator" which explains how Duterte supporters used online influence operations to drum up fear of crime — which inspired and gave cover to a wave of extra-judicial killings (2015/2016). Ressa's digital first media outlet, Rappler, covered the killings... and led to brutal online harassment (of her and her colleagues) and the government of Philippines levying a wave of false charges against her.
