I've talked to a lot of homosexuals (atheists, left wingers, gay people) over the course of my life. The ones that got really uppity report that shit like this happened to them.
"We are going to cut you out of family events", often accompanied by "I never talked about it" or "I didn't tell them I was queer" or "I didn't even realize it myself" or stuff like that. They talk about how that turned them against their family, or Christianity, or traditional values entirely.
Now consider many of them were exaggerating or lying about how well behaved they were. In fact, some of them I know were lying because of how they acted around me. But some seem honest enough. They didn't want to step on any toes, some wanted to stay closeted, some didn't even like being that way and were even willing to try to pray the gay away and I believe that.
I've also talked to a lot of Christian conservatives. Often their view is that this family member wouldn't stop shoving their identity into things, but sometimes they admit "they weren't causing problems" and seem to feel genuine guilt.
But not once, not one time, have I talked to a Christian conservative who said they cut a relative out of family events but then stressed "They were really polite and didn't talk about it at all" then get angry that they weren't being mailed gifts. Not one fucking time.
