A few thoughts:
* Online security and community safety is a group project
* It can never be perfect ... but
* It must be a best effort to protect ourselves within our capacity and ability
* This space is filled with people running instances as a hobby
* We should set expectations of risk within that and make sure everyone is comfortable with the risks they are taking
* We should help each other recover and fix issues
* We should all use this as a learning opportunity about risk and our own security
* You would be surprised at how little corporate sites protect your data (if at all)
That's how I'm approaching things at least. I would be happy to coordinate with Kolektiva and other radical instances on creating standards and agreements on securing masto instances. We also need an awareness campaign of how insecure Mastodon is (very). Self "opsec" (I hate that term) should be postured to the riskiness of the space.
