We sent spacecraft out of the solar system, carrying a message from our little civilization to whoever out there might find it and understand it.

Imagine a galaxy awash with these kinds of probes, each sent by a civilization with amazing dreams of encountering another intelligence among the stars.

Now imagine an intelligence older than the stars, collecting, somewhat sadly, these countless probes as mementos of civilizations that dreamt, then died.
