Nextcloud seems to have the strongest user and group permissions model. It's far more complicated to set up than, say, Syncthing, but absolutely worthwhile as soon as you want to share files with family and friends.
Calendar-sharing with family members has quickly become a "killer app" for Nextcloud, too. I don't know any other FOSS project that offers web interface + native apps for Android and IOS for sharing calendar entries.
