crushed up coal works fine too, sugar has a very rapid effect but any form of carbon helps, charcoal will work as well, this biochar stuff is part of this but even just cowshit and mulched up lawn clippings... if it's mostly carbon, plow it back into the soil, don't burn anything, no burning, if you are in desert
