The Dread Slender Gnome on Nostr: I've heard the "10 000 steps a day" guideline a lot, but I've never stopped to think ...

I've heard the "10 000 steps a day" guideline a lot, but I've never stopped to think how much walking that actually amounts to. But inspired by a YT video in which a man set out to see how manageable it actually is, I thought I'd find out how many km 10 000 steps actually is. Turns out it's 7km and then a bit.

As someone with a sit-down job, I have to say there's no way I could consistently achieve that every day, especially on work days. Even if I walk to the office and back (which I sometimes do), I'll barely rack up 6km, and it takes a significant chunk of time out of my day. To get it to the recommended 7km+, I'd still have to find time to get in more than 1km of walking. And never mind adding any actual sport to the mix.

Personally I much prefer to spend 1-2h of medium to strenuous exercise per day, than to faff about with walking. And on non-work days, I'm happy to make that 3-4h (or more) when the mood strikes me.

So in conclusion, I'm still not going to start counting my steps per day. I'm sure walking is a low threshold exercise for some, but for me it would just cut into the time I want or need to spend doing other things. Some of which are actual sports. Trying to "get my steps in" would just end up being another thing to juggle in addition to things I already need to fit into my schedule. And probably wouldn't benefit me much anyway.

Oh and in case anyone is interested, here's the video that got me thinking about this.
