Dunki (Hindi): h.f.s. this Bollywood movie about immigration and emigration woes, the unnecessary restrictions (only since 140 years ago) on obtaining visas legally & the millions who flee their homelands seeking a better life each year as well as the tragedies of those who die was AMAZING! Delivered with a healthy dose of comedy. Best movie of 2023? Probably not, but top 10 Bollywood films that I have seen in 2023? For sure!
Salaar: Part 1 - Ceasefire (Telugu): do you like movies with lots of violence? That are also really long? Maybe you'll like this but it's only part 1! I am not really into such things so I am less sure I will bother with Part 2 - Shouryaanga Parvam when it comes out; but hey at least it makes an effort at the killing being justified (when it is by the protagonist of course. Most of the other people doing the violent murdering are evil, OBVIOUSLY).
Ferrari: I hated more or less EVERYTHING about this. Was there a single person in the movie who did not seem like a terrible person? Seems dubious! Maybe the jilted wife who lost her son and has been cheated on for decades by a prevaricating asshole played by Adam Driver. I also hate cars, so why would I like this? No idea. This could have been 45 minutes shorter and better for it.
Migration: CGI movie with ducks and stuff. Family friendly I guess? I saw this in 4DX and hated that experience entirely. Maybe it would have been better in normal 3D without the moving chairs and stench?
Poor Things: this movie screams as if it is trying to be an art house movie a little too hard to me. Take 1 part Eraserhead 1 part Frankenweenie 3 parts Henry and June and sprinkle in a dash of What Dreams May Come? Not my cup of tea, way too bourgeoisie.
The Boys in the Boat: WWII era sports movie about poor kids rowing a boat to pay tuition. Murican gumption & all that. Meh. Patriotic Olympic pablum.
Anyone But You: rom-com with hawt young thangs. Lots of rom, not much com.
