Economy of scale suggests smaller instances of 100 or less active users are probably the cheapest way to run things, since fixed costs and all that are a thing. If your server suddenly asked you to donate— asked, not mandated— would you feel offended? I find the idea of balking at the mere idea of asking for donations for a community funded project very odd. Graf puts hundreds, probably thousands, a month out of his own pocket for this, and the volume of people on this side of the fediverse is in no small part because of his project.
