Just look up how much companies like ASML/TSMC spent to make the most recent nodes happen. And they have to recoup all of that ridiculous cost.
While they could probably lower prices a decent bit if there was no monopoly and they built out more capacity, recent nodes have a benefit in terms of efficiency, but it seems chips as a whole have passed the efficiency curve when it comes to pricing.
There's a reason TSMC left others in the dust. At this point high-end chip production is so ridiculously expensive that you pretty much need the backing of a whole country and it's almost kept alive more for political reasons than profitability.
