So, I quickly discovered that the WD Blue 4 TB drives that I purchased at Best Buy in December, were in fact CMR disks. Indeed, when I checked the model number on the boxes with the manufacturer’s data sheet (WD40EZAX, below), I confirmed that they were indeed CMR drives.
I “discovered” this when I noticed that both drives were writing their backups of the SSD at a full 200 MB/s… without any of the weird halts and speed changes that made writing to SMR disks so… “””exciting.”””
