In the latter you might call something that isn't proven 'theory' and something that *is* proven a 'fact.' On the other hand, science refers to an unproven idea as a 'hypothesis' and one that has widely accepted *proof* as 'theory.' Not as a fact, because we just can't be 100% sure of anything.
