dear everything that still uses $HOME/ (or %USERDIR% on Windows) to save files

please use XDG dir variables when they're there (or %APPDATA% and %LOCALAPPDATA% on Windows)

(on mac almost everyone already uses $HOME/Library/Application Support and $HOME/Library/Cache so they get a pass)
