Machines don’t have survival drives or emotional drives because those are functions of organic beings. Biochemistry, not mathematics or electricity, is what drives self-preservation and reproduction.
I don’t think the machines that we can make will ever be sentient. Super-intelligent, sure, but not sentient. They are our tools and extensions and reflections of our consciousness. They don’t have consciousness of their own, and I doubt they ever will, because the material they are made from precludes the possibility.
