because learning is also destructive and sometimes the tide is so high that you can't afford to leave your local maximum for greener pastures
(I wrote this before looking at the context, just about learning in general, but it seems even more appropriate now that I've read it)
but yeah, apart from the case I just described where you can't afford it, lots of people who can afford it still don't, or kind of, are themselves by accident instead of on purpose, and I can't give any real justification, only an explanation of "they haven't been in that kind of situation"
I needed to do it to survive and now that restriction is gone and I still have the meta-skill
