For wide scale adoption this will be needed. Once we're beyond the early adopters who understand the protocol more we will get to a point where a lot of users won't even know what a relay is.
Just like the ongoing desire to "fix" the Bitcoin UX for adoption the same thing applies here. For most systems people use day to day they are rarely aware of the underlying protocols and mechanics.
