The condition manifests differently in different individuals, as for myself I became extremely agitated & aggressive towards both locals whilst on deployment & towards other males back in Australia. It took me 5 years after discharging to seek assistance & get a diagnosis. The condition (for me at least) isn’t curable (manifests in nightmares, panic attacks, feelings of dread, anxiety etc) but is manageable with lifestyle change & assistance from Veterans groups, doctors etc. The attraction came from the desire to emulate family that came before me (WW1, WW2, Korea). As a young bloke who had a limited experience with anything close to this before joining I doubt much could have deterred me & I am very proud of my service to this day, in some ways “coming home” is the hardest part. But the young person doesn’t understand the implications of the effect on the subconscious, it’s only later you can fully grasp the effects on yourself personally. I’ll randomly remember something & feel a punch of realisation in my stomach (I won’t illustrate specifics but some things are quite disturbing). Most of the time it’s tiny snippets of detail (for me at least) & then when you see us collectively pull out without making any difference it stokes the fire again.
