I think the issue is you are talking about two different groups of people.
There are certain genres that indie games don't touch as they are to expensive. Open world RPGs. Epic action RPGs. Most hop-in multiplayer genres.
So if you want to play something similar to Mass Effect or Assassin's Creed or Skyrim? There aren't really any indie games that are replacements.
