That's one of my favorite things about this approach. WoT prescribes that "follow == trust". It means you can't follow people whom you _don't_ trust or like, yet want to see what they're saying.
Alternatives, like the contextual influence stuff, mean that you can build up arbitrary lists that surface segments of accounts you want to see content from for various reasons (those being the "other motives and incentives" you bring up as other reasons to "follow").
