I mean, I've been watching the glaciers on the Cascades shrink. I knew it was getting bad. I remember my grandfather talking about how it wasn't uncommon for us to get 6' of snow-- in my lifetime we only had 3' twice, and lately it rarely tops 6".

Every winter used to have periods colder than -10F, now it rarely hits 0.

That plus having parents who are familiar enough with the local ecology to point out the signs of stress on the trees and so forth.

And then came the fires.
