they basically just charge for the latest binary. i'm sure there are distributions who keep up-to-date binaries.
Ubuntu isn't one of them.
i can download the source code and compile it, and i'm sure i could pull that off, but many users of Ardour aren't technical users. they're experts on music production, not computers.
Linux is probably the easiest platform to compile Ardour for, followed by macOS, since they're UNIX-like, but it's a big ask for a Windows user.
