Listening to a podcast (99% Invisible) about Spirit Halloween stores and heard an appalling fact. The US has ~50 sq ft. of retail space per person. For comparison, Australia has 11, European counties even less.
Partly, the US just has more space to allow for this. But mostly, it's absolutely terrible land use regulation.
