There is indeed a risk that the US could turn fascist. There is even a small risk that Trump turns fascist. In some ways, he already is.

That's why he must win.

We may not like it, but fascism is the normal human response to chaos and division. It's why Plato thought tyranny naturally follows democracy.

Democracy inherently pursues equality until all hierarchies have been degraded or deconstructed - leaving everyone disoriented.

Does that sound familiar?

Fascism is the extreme "fix" that reimposes order and unity when democracy has gone "too far".

The only thing keeping fascism temporarily at bay are occasional bouts of strong leaders being democratically elected to limit the excesses of equality.

Once democracy can no longer tolerate this it self-destructs.

That's why Trump is our best hope of extending the lifespan of US democracy.

The man is 80 years old, he is still embedded in strong institutions, and the excesses of democracy are not yet bad enough to trigger broad fascist reflexes.

He may make some questionable choices in power but his track record is not fascist, save for the "only I can fix it" rhetoric.

Most importantly, he can't run for a third term. That won't change in 4 years.

Meanwhile, if Kamala wins the system will never allow a strong leader to run again. From restrictions on free speech to the mass import of voters, it will do anything to avoid another Trump.

Democracy can no longer risk being democratic.

Ironically, this means democracy collapses trying to save itself, until there is nothing left but the name and the tyranny that inevitably replaces it.

By being a bit foresighted while learning from history we can avoid that irony.

At least for now.
