The body gets used to the frequent washing and can take awhile to adapt when it's suddenly stopped. Amazing what the body is capable of!
Food is a similar example - we don't need nearly as much as we think. My friend only eats/drinks in a 1-hour window each day, and has been doing that for years while running a landscaping company he does the majority of the manual labor for.
