The Silmarillion is his background autism project. Him fleshing out his world, giving his languages a place, and exploring theology. I quite like that one story about an elf and a human discussing mortality and where man goes after death. Tolkien was conveying important concepts by wrapping them in fantasy. Big contrast to people like Sanderson and Martin who write genre first.
