In the 19th century, eastern gray (aka grey) squirrels were introduced to the U.K. Today, there are around 2.5 million of them in Britain, and just 150,000 of the country's native red variety. Over the past 100 years, there's been a move to change that, with King Charles in 2014 ordering the killing of 4,000 eastern gray squirrels on his Duchy of Cornwall estate, saying: "The grey just doesn't belong here." The Dial looks at whether this is a kind of "eco-xenophobia" — and if the gray squirrel is really such a pest at all.
