I put on some Screaming Trees this evening because i was in the mood for some reason … and i started to think about “grunge” (i was there but on the young side) … about what a strange and sort of incoherent genre it was … and how Nirvana, obviously one of the most important of the era, were really not at all like the rest of “grunge” as it became in the 90’s. listening to Screaming Trees and thinking about this it seems really clear that somewhere along the way the SST/Melvins scene got pulled into this narrative (and Nirvana along with them) where almost all the other bands labeled as “grunge” were way more in the Screaming Trees/Green River kind of post-hard-rock area… not that any of this matters and i am slightly high … but it’s sort of always bothered me for some reason. (aside…maybe the missing link is the meat puppets? not sure that’s enough to make me believe that nirvana and pearl jam are in the same genre)
