Let’s give Meta the benefit of the doubt for one second and assume they want to embrace and extend but not extinguish #ActivityPub. Where do they go for the extend part? XMPP has the XMPP Standards Foundation that gives a diverse set of stakeholders a framework to collaborate on new extensions.
From standing on the sidelines for a year it looks a lot like #Mastodon is pretty much just doing their own thing.
