I'm also aware that a head start for some devs over others is hard to overcome. There is a circle-jerk network effect at play that I've noticed as a user. I have no doubt that is playing a role. I think it'll get better in the coming years. I hope so at least. Maybe users like me are part of the problem for not going out of the way to explore and support other tech and devs. But it also isn't all on me to have my attention caught in a free market.
Is it possible that all the OpenSats bickering is an indication that there's simply no financial incentive for what's being built?

I get that novel tech has to get off the ground, but there has to be some plan to become self-sustaining at some point.

There may be deeper issues if your work is dead simply because OpenSats won't fund it.

It's not lost on me that it is difficult to build anything that people are willing to pay for (especially in the FOSS space), but no one has a right to donor funding. OpenSats is what it is.

I suspect the current funding model will ultimately result in worse products because developers are incentivized to please OpenSats rather than actual users.

Frankly, I'm more excited about using products that give a fuck what I want and value. I'm willing to pay for that.

There is a chicken or egg component to this that is absolutely a challenge for developers. No doubt. But if your users aren't willing to support you and you need OpenSats money...maybe you just don't have a viable product for the current market. Or you lack marketing. Maybe you're just unlucky and have an excellent product that has gone unnoticed. I have many thoughts, but I don't have all the answers.
