I can only speak with first hand experience of the UK as a European example though. Certainly here any attempts by politicians to wrap religious views into their speil is regarded with distaste in general. Likewise religious leaders are usually unwise to overtly pontificate on things perceived as political issues. Govt. is secular.

I think the same is true in most of Northern Europe, but maybe wrong.
