Although i can't fault the film for not trying as i think audiences accusing the film of a sympathetic stance towards its male protagonist just ignore as how much of a pathetic, spineless, cruel and manipulative monster Humbert is actually portrayed here. But yes, the film is kind of a mess that sadly also struggles with tone in pivotal places.
