This tree is just off a local greenway (eastern NC). I think it is a water tupelo. The diameter of the base is quite large (ten or 15 feet?). If I'm ever there when the ground is dry, I think I will try to measure it. Pareidolia gleefully provides me with what looks like a goblin sitting at the back of the cavity, hunched over with long legs dangling into the water.
