People assume this must mean Japanese are cynical about or indifferent to religion, the way many Europeans are, yet Japan is riddled with Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples that are regularly frequented by locals (and not just old people). Every block has its own little carefully tended shrine with a statue that is ostensibly of the Kṣitigarbha bodhisattva. And Japanese are generally superstitious despite having excellent science education. What we call “religion” is in fact quite important to most Japanese; just not in a way that is recognizable to most foreigners. (3/3)
