This mug I made for my father-in-law sent me on a bit of an emotional rollercoaster today 😅
First, I saw it sitting on the finished shelf, looking mighty fine. The drippy multicolored rim and thumb rest came out just right, and the inside and outside were perfectly color-matched despite being two different glazes, one glossy, one matte. Bright, sunny, and fun, just like who it was made for. 😁
Then, I went to pick it up, and the “cookie” came with it 😬
A cookie is a piece of fired clay meant to keep glazes from sticking to a kiln shelf if they run. I had asked for a cookie because I was concerned a few of the glaze chips I used on the rim might fall off. Had so many fallen off they welded the piece to the cookie? Removing it could be difficult.
Looking closer, I saw this was no cookie, but an entire fully glazed tile. Someone had mistaken someone else’s work for a cookie and put it under mine, ruining both pieces. 😭 Since the mug was welded to this piece by its entire surface, not just a couple fallen glaze chips, I was surely gonna have to start all over making a mug for my FIL.
The guy who runs the studio noticed my plight and showed what had happened to the owner of the tile, then carefully took a hammer to it. Slowly, he actually managed to remove every piece of the tile from the mug. Because the bottom had a slight concavity, even my signature managed to survive! Unfortunately, the cute tile did not.
He sanded the bottom of my piece and gave it back to me. I’m astonished and grateful that my hard work was saved and I still have a great gift for my FIL. 🙏
