You *can* combine Syncthing with nextcloud, but not internally to the Nextcloud ecosystem. Set up your share directory as an "external storage" folder in Nextcloud, and set up Syncthing to sync that directory with devices independently of Nextcloud. When a device adds new photos/files to the share directory, it will be available to Nextcloud users who have access to that folder.
Not sure if that's the solution you're looking for, but this works well for me!
