After dealing with this with our own startup, and talking to other founders, it’s sad how common this is. Anyone who thinks this is okay is immoral.
If you do this to a big corporation, it’s not gonna drive them into the ground overnight — but if you do this to a small business, you definitely can destroy them. Or at least set them back immensely. It happened to us. Startups have limited funds and its crucial that wages are allocated to people providing value.
I don’t fully understand why people prey on startups like this. Maybe because they know that some founders are naive, trusting?
Startup founders assume that others will recognize the sacrifices, blood, sweat and tears that it took to get the company off the ground… but unfortunately there are plenty of lazy people out there that are only out for themselves. Hard lesson but its the truth. You have to use strong discernment when hiring in the startup world.
