The other major annoyance is that no two CP/M machines were in any way guaranteed to share a disk format -- while the capabilities of the CP/M BDOS were common across all of them, the actual on-disk format was intentionally unspecified. This meant that, back in the day, if you had a Kaypro, a disk for an Eagle probably wouldn't work at all, even if it was the same kind of media you used, which was by no means assured -- CP/M systems used drives from 8" to 3½" without complaint.
The solution to this turned out to be BBSes -- you didn't need to worry about disk formats for things you downloaded from one of the Z-Node BBSes or anywhere else.
