Growing up as the son of Azorean immigrants in Canada, I lost touch with my culture and language. Despite speaking Portuguese as a child, I gradually lost my proficiency in the language, and I missed out on family traditions and events. I felt like an outsider among my Portuguese-speaking relatives and struggled to understand their stories, songs, and customs. Over time, I came to realize what I had lost and felt a deep sense of longing for my cultural roots. Despite my efforts to reconnect, I still feel disconnected from my heritage, and I mourn the loss of the language, traditions, and values that are so important to my family's history.
